Creative Color – Lighting and A Little Drama

A big thanks to everyone who read the blog yesterday and sent me messages of encouragement and validation.  I LOVE that some of you even committed to getting a little more “foolish” with creative color in your own lives.  My color mission is on track!

I’m back today to “color out loud”.  One of the reasons I started this blog was to share my love of color with others.  I truly believe that color has immense power and I know it can change my attitude or give me hope on a tough day.  For me, color is like food.  I must have it to thrive.  When it’s absent, I can feel the effects and I crave it.  I am learning to appreciate my connection with color and my ability to see it in ways others don’t.  I share color here in hopes of inspiring others, making a difference, changing the way people see things around them…or just making someone smile!

Some days it’s just that simple.  Color = smile.

Today I received color smiles and design inspiration  in the form of some beautiful, colorful lighting!

Did you have the same reaction I did?  I had to catch my breath!  This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this piece of lighting and I reacted the same way on our first encounter.  I could potentially write a dissertation on this there’s so much here to love!  I would never STOP smiling if it was in my home.  I’d probably blog about it every day.  You’d get really sick of hearing about it…we’d have a blog breakup…drama would ensue.  Yes, it’s THAT special!   This came to me again today in an email from my friend Diane who sent me the link and these words “I think I just died and went to Heaven !!!”  I get it!

You can find this charmer, Catalonia Chandelier, at Shine by S. H. O.  Make sure you have a few extra minutes when you’re there because you *might* want to look around a little.  For instance…

The Sugalite Pendant is like Cinderella dressed up for the ball!  It’s elegant and dreamy!  I already have a vision for the room this baby would hang in and it involves these chairs I saw on Color Sizzle.

This next light, from Satelight, is really inspiring for me personally.  I have a vision of my melissaAnne COLORS abstracts printed on silk and linen fabrics covering lampshades.  Pendant lamps and table lamps with beautiful blown glass bases in unique colors pulled from natural shades in my images.  I tested a DIY lampshade to give to someone as a gift last year.  The fabric worked fine, the DIY…well, I’m not Martha Stewart.

My final color smile came from something that is near and dear to my heart.  Hidden color palettes!  I’ve talked about this before.  It’s kinda an obsession with me.  Colorful designs outside of clear view that when seen feel like you’re sneaking into a present you weren’t meant to see.  A little danger.  A little intrigue.   A little forbidden color.

Meet lighting from Satelight with a hidden color palette.

I hope you enjoyed today’s color and something here inspired you to do something fun with color or just made you smile.  If you see some fun color if your life today let us know in the comments here on the blog or share it with us at melissaAnne COLORS on Facebook.

Yoga Color

Something pointed me to yoga today.

First off, I’ll admit that I don’t do yoga on a regular basis.

Part of the yoga trending included Lululemon.  It came up in conversations yesterday and today so I thought I’d stop by the website and see if there was anything I could use for this post.

!!!!!!  Lululemon !!!!!

You had me at “shop by colour“.

Really?  No, REALLY?  An online store I can SERIOUSLY shop by color?  That just makes me happy!  Zen.  Who needs a downward facing dog?

I want all retail websites to use this model.  I want to shop by color, read by color, Facebook by color, blog by color. ..you get the point.

So while there, I of course had to shop by “Aruba” and picked out a great pair of pants.

Maybe if I bought these I’d be inspired to go to a yoga class.  But, I need a yoga mat.

Oh how perfect!  My favorite colors.  This looks promising.

A little while later (while I was still sitting at the computer contemplating the benefits of yoga) I got a Twitter follow from a fellow Brooklyn artist.  I checked out his artistic domain of course.

Let me introduce you to  Orlando Dominguez.   Orlando creates beautiful art sculptures and to my surprise he had several yoga sculptures.  Here’s my favorite.

I won’t be trying this pose any time soon, but it WOULD color coordinate with that yoga gear…

I also discovered that Orlando designs furniture so I had to browse.  I mean after yoga I might need to sit or lie down…

This will do JUST fine.

I’ll be in my princess chair, “Bluesy Chictorian“, for the rest of the day if anyone is looking for me.  Oh and I’m going to put “Pink Chictorian” in the post for a friend of mine in Florida who celebrated her birthday today.  She is to pink what I am to the blues.

Thanks Orlando for the princess fantasy I plan to have ALL day today.  Your designs are fabulous!

I really had no idea yoga could be so colorful!  I’m so inspired….

Colorful Workspaces

It’s no secret I love color.  It’s what this whole blog is about basically.  But, I have a confession to make.  My workspace is drastically lacking in color!  I keep thinking I’ll do something about it.  Paint a dramatic color on the wall, buy some fun bookshelves and paint each shelf a different color or line the back of the shelves with different colors and patterns of wallpaper, and get some fun desk accessories.  But, I’m still “waiting” on something to motivate me and dreaming of what it “could be”.

The other day I saw some inspiring pictures of creative and color offices and it re-awakened my vision of “working with color”.  How fun would it be to work for these companies and spend your day in these offices?

Hyves, Holland

I think this is the lobby.  Coming to work every day and seeing a burst of blue and orange could never be a bad thing!

Spiral!  Oh, spirals!

WHAT?  Is this a lunch room?  An art room?  Whatever it is, LET ME IN!!  These circular lamps make me want to jump right in!

The stairwell…well, I’ve got 1/2 color love and 1/2 photographer envy going on.  I LOVE taking fun pictures of stairs!

Here’s a fun example of a colorful office you could have in your home.  I love the art on the walls.  You could make your own with markers or pastels. I know because when I’m not taking pictures, I’ve been experimenting with pastels and have made some of these square on square shapes.  The bookshelf with the lunch boxes is GENIUS!  A practical storage solution and color CUTE!!  If this were my office they would be filled with camera gear, crayons, markers, paint brushes, and pastels.  I’d work in here any day, all day!  I’d only change one thing (come back Thursday to see what).

Lonny Magazine

This is what it looks like to work in the Lilly Pulitzer studio.  Pink, paint, textiles…I think I’ll submit my resume tomorrow!!

Rue Mag

Lifestyle expert Kelley Moore’s offices look amazing also.  A loft, color, brick walls, chandeliers?  Maybe I should send a resume here too.   Delicious!

I could go on, but I’ll stop here.  You probably need to get to work. If your office isn’t quite as creative and colorful as these, it’s OK.  You aren’t alone.  But you can grab some markers or pastels and put your OWN color to work for you.  After all, creativity is for EVERYONE!  And so, I say, is COLOR!

Wednesday I’m launching a new “theme day” and Thursday I have some great office accessories to share, colorful ones of course, that will also add some color to your work space.  Come back and check them out!

Feeling Blue?

I love the color BLUE.  I always have. When I was young my bedroom had BLUE walls. I had comforters and pillows of BLUE.  It was all BLUE…except for the pink reclining chair I sat in to do my homework and watch baseball (hour after hour).

BLUE, any shade, is a color that makes me smile.  It gives me a burst of energy.  It excites me.  Maybe not surprising given that the color BLUE is often used to awaken artistic expression and inspiration.  Well, I’m here to say it works!

Let’s get inspired with some BLUE!  Here are my favorite BLUE inspirations from the last few weeks.

casa sugar

Love the orange and turquoise and the tree on the wall.  What a great headboard substitute!

You can just move those chairs and that couch right into my living room, thank you!

To Resolve Project

I LOVE the To Resolve Project.  Creatives illustrating their New Years Resolutions.  And what’s even better, they are available for download onto your iPhone.  If one catches your eye or fits your resolution give it a try!

iVillage

I’d like to sit in this room and read my blogs and emails tomorrow morning (but I’d probably end up staring at the painting and the chandelier all day).  What would you do in this room?

10 Rooms

WAIT!  Really?  Check out this dipped furniture.  How FUN is this.  I want to try this NOW!  What can you “dip”?

Decor8

I had an idea in December to make a cute ruffle skirt for a chair slipcover I have that needs a little personality.  I LOVE how it was done on this chair.  It inspires me even more to dress up my chair SOON!

I met artist John Murphy this weekend at the Brooklyn Flea.  His frames are beautiful!  They are made of resin and are sturdy and VERY colorful.  Shown is a great grey/blue color but there are lights, brights, neutrals.  Check them out!

I recently purchased this print from the talented Whitney Ferre.  Something got me the moment I saw it on her blog, Creatively Fit, and I had to have it.  I’m not sure  if it was my new “blue” shade or if it was something magical about this angel that spoke to me.  Whatever it was, she’s mine now and will be framed and hanging soon to soothe me with color.

I have a free gift for you today.  I’m giving you some of my own COLOR.

What’s Your Color Personality?

I’m always looking for fun things to do that involve color, so when I found this color profile quiz I had to check it out.  It was quick and easy and I got to look at pretty pictures and think about a dream vacation (my selection might surprise you…).

Not so surprising, however, was my color profile.

My Color Profile from Pratt and Lambert Paints…Turquoise, Blues, Gold…Perfect!!

Right on target!  I’m obsessed with turquoise and lately the darker blues have been appearing in artwork I’ve received as gifts or purchased because I felt a connection.  My office and living room share a space (like many other New Yorkers, I’m a bit space deprived)  and my thoughts lately have been to paint the wall at my “office” location turquoise and the “living” area a deep grey/blue to give it some separation.  The test colors are so perfect.

Want your color personality?  Ready to play with color and dream of your next vacation?

Head over to Pratt & Lambert Paints and take your color quiz.  Have fun and come back and let me know what your profile is and if it connects with the colors you’ve been dreaming about lately.
