My Journey To melissaAnne COLORS Textile Products

My Journey To COLORS Textile Products

If you have followed along on my photography journey over the last 8+ years you know that I’ve had a long-time dream of putting my abstract style images on textiles for a branded line of melissaAnne COLORS textile products. The dream began many years ago with a single image, a desire to create my own handbag and evolved into research and design of pillows several years later.

I made a prototype collection of pillows from my Water Colors and Urban Colors images but never got as far as taking them to market.

Why? Well, a list of reasons, including the financial commitment required, “life” happening around me and my desire for fine fabrics and quality production. That last part has been the hardest to come by. When you are a small business, requiring customized small production runs your options are limited. I tried many companies and either the quality was not the right fit or the customer service was not what I expected and required.

When I was building my melissaAnne COLORS brand the personality was all about color, vibrancy, and uniqueness.

It was about getting up early and being in the right place at the right time for that special moment of color. Or staying up late to capture more moments. It was about taking adventures and not playing it safe in my own back yard. It was about seeing the world differently and sharing my passion for color!

When it came to textiles, there was a sensory expression that was of equal importance to me. I wanted the colors to FEEL as vibrant and special as they looked. I could only do that with the right products, textiles and vendors. Without it, it just wasn’t worth going to market.

Fast forward several years, lots of Google searching, trials and errors and some down right failures in working with vendors, persistence…and letting go of expectations…and here we are.

Persistence pays off…Letting go seals the deal.

Last year I found a new company that offered custom printing on textiles. Some of the requirements I’d set early in my search didn’t fit but I decided to let them go and take a chance. After all nothing had quite worked out so far. “Let’s just see…”

So I ordered fabric samples and they were fantastic! Rich, soft, luxurious…FEEL – check.

I ordered product samples with my designs and they were fantastic (like stopped on the street with comments from strangers fantastic…)! QUALITY…check.

I emailed with questions and support and the company was timely and supportive, even on weekends. Partnership-worthy CUSTOMER SERVICE…check!!

Getting Started With Scarves

It’s time. I’m going for it and I’m taking a slightly new direction with melissaAnne COLORS textile products and starting with fashion accessories instead of home accessories. The next step in my journey is a Spring Scarf launch with melissaAnne COLORS Impressionist Photography Designs. I selected two of my favorite and most popular images, one representing my current home in the Pacific Northwest and the other my soul home in Amsterdam. I can’t think of a better way to start.

Thanks for sticking with me. Thanks for listening to my textile dreams and not giving up on me…so I wouldn’t give up on them. And now, let’s do this! And, stay tuned…sample pillows are next on my list.

Dedication, Persistence, Letting Go…To Make It Go!

I’m placing my launch collection order on April 10 and as a supporter of melissaAnne COLORS I’m giving you an opportunity to purchase direct from me by April 9 at a special launch price. Scarves will be shipped in 4-6 weeks as each scarf is custom-made to order.

Dreams, Boats, and Jonathan Adler…

Maybe a strange combination….maybe not….A few of my favorite colorful inspirations for the week.

I discovered the colorfully talented Jessica Swift on Facebook this week.  I love her story and her big, colorful dreams!!  Check it out below and send her a little color love (in the form of green) if you can!  I’d like to wear these boots one day.  She’s a color diva after my own heart with secret messages hidden in the boots.  I had a similar, yet very different, idea for my pillow line.  THAT you’ll have to wait for…

I saw this awesomely whimsical, right up my alley harbor decor idea on Apartment Therapy this week.  LOVE IT!  The big question for me….does the inside show…or the BOTTOM?  I have the perfect boat in mind for my ceiling.  I can find it on Martha’s Vineyard!

Apartment Therapy

A favorite boat on Martha's Vineyard!

Jonathan Adler has a new limited edition furniture collection.  I’ll take these two for my next home office.  Punctuate with some orange accents (like an orange Moroccan pouf…also available from Jonathan Adler) and my creative life will be completely fulfilled!

And finally, this is definitely my favorite color of the week. This wall paint has my name written ALL over it! HEAVENLY!

House To Home

Interestingly enough, they would all go nicely in a house together.  THAT was a coincidence.

I hope you are having a colorful week and are finding your color inspiration in the world around you!

Wednesday Words No. 2

This week has gone so fast!  I almost forgot it was time for Wednesday Words.

Here are some fun “word” products and art to entertain and inspire.

Leave it to a creative from Brooklyn to create The Google Pillow collection inspired by the top Google searches.  I think this pillow is hilarious!  There is a pillow for each year, beginning in 2006 (shown above is 2010).   It’s like a time capsule on a pillow. You can see them all at the elastic co Etsy store. (I NEVER thought I’d have the words “Justin Bieber” on my blog! My niece is going to think I’m SO COOL.)

I love this letterpress poster from Roll & Tumble Press.  It makes me smile…as do the old cameras!  It could be on this photographer’s art wish list very soon.

If this isn’t how I’ve been feeling in the snowy, cold environs of NYC I don’t know what is!  The silk screen poster from Slide Sideways brings shine and inspiration today.

I’ve seen these fun vinyl wall art and decals before.  I think they are a lot of fun and a great way to decorate with words.  Instead of “writing on the walls” like we did with chalkboard paint the other day, you can  Right on the Walls with these decals.

My most favorite has to be this beautiful colorful front door! I could find lots of Peace, Love and Joy if I had that front entrance!

That’s all for our Wednesday Words.  What words would you like to use to add a little personal design to your house?  Me…

Happy Wednesday!

5 Things Winter Makes Me Grateful For

When I woke up today it was 6 degrees.  That’s cold.  Really, really cold.

I don’t like cold.  I was feeling absolutely trapped and overcome by the cold.  So I decided to turn it around and create a “Winter Gratitude” list.

Here are the things about Winter I am grateful for.

Fluffy Scarves

There is something soothing about wrapping up in a big warm scarf.  It’s like putting on a superhero cape before going out to defend the world (or your body’s internal temperature).  I love this bright pink  kate spade scarf.  It looks warm but the color also makes me think of Spring.

What I like even more about it is it is entirely hand-knit by women in Bosnia through kate spade’s hand in hand partnership with Women For Women International.

Since 2005, kate spade new york and Women for Women International have been working together to promote microenterprises for women in the still recovering communities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. The enterprise is the next step in an ongoing product development partnership over the past four years. Women for Women International provides the training in knitting for the women, with creative direction from kate spade new york.

Warm, fashionable, colorful, and making a difference.  A win-win-win-win in my book!

Warm Boots

Warm feet = happy in my world.  One of the ONLY perks for me when Old Man Winter arrives is that I get to pull out my Coach puffer boots.  Warm.  Color.  LOVE!

{warm feet = happy}  {Coach = happy}

Hot Chocolate…SPICY Hot Chocolate

I have to admit that this Winter I’ve become addicted to Spicy Hot Chocolate.

Lake Champlain Aztec Spicy Hot Chocolate is my “warm hug in a mug” on an almost daily basis.  Not to mention that the packaging wakes me right up with its vibrant colors and shapes!

Lamb Chili…With LOTS of Cinnamon

I LOVE lamb and a Winter evening paired with lamb chili makes me almost enjoy the cold!  Almost…

Photo:  Country Living

When I’m in a hurry I make an easy lamb chili with Amy’s Medium Chili (with a few dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg for that extra warm spice feel), brown some ground lamb with cinnamon.  Mix.  Add a little FAGE Greek Yogurt. EAT!  Warm!  Happy!!

March = Spring

The cold won’t last forever, Spring will return.

Colors will return to the trees and flowers will bloom.

Snow won’t be snow…it will just be rain.

Maybe I can get these Coach Rain Boots to replace my Winter Boots.

{dry feet = happy}  {Coach = happy}

*What’s your Winter gratitude? *

Color Workspaces – Accessorize!!!

Tuesday we toured some colorful workplaces from around the web.  Now let’s look at how we can bring some fun into our own offices and workday.

Of course there is furniture.  Remember that GREAT office with the colorful art and lunchbox bookcase?  Well, I’m still in love with it but I still want to change something.

I’d like a different chair.  Perhaps one of these.

I LOVE these chairs from Community Furniture.  I’m not sure which one I’d get…surprisingly the turquoise is not my quick selection.  Orange is tempting.  But then there is the purple.   I feel like the color energy would seep into me as I sat and I’d be the most creative chic on the block.  I might even get a reputation… What color are you creating from?

Have a bookcase in your office?  Dress it up!  I’ve always loved this next idea. Put wallpaper remnants, contact paper, favorite photos or anything colorful behind the shelves like the dining room feature shown below.  A fun DIY to tackle this weekend.

You can also paint the back panel with a bright color (or 2 or 3) to add some fun color pop like the living room piece shown on Decor Arts Now.

If you’re feeling really creative, do a little of both!  Mix it up.  Decorate some shelves with a patterned paper and keep some a solid color!

After furnishings, we need accessories.  Check out See Jane Work.  There is no shortage of fun colorful office supplies on this website.  I could buy one of each!  But, I did have a few favs.

Kate Spade Pencils?!?!

Lilly Pulitzer Highlighters for feeling fresh and girlie.

OH, YES!  Jonathan Adler pens?  I’ll take a case of these!!  We’ve got favorite designers “at our fingertips”!

When we’re done writing, and drawing, and coloring, and highlighting, and doodling…..we”ll need to organize some things.

A few not so boring folders!

REALLY not boring and down right FUN flag strips ! *

When Spring FINALLY arrives, we might want to tear ourselves away from our beautiful offices and take some work to the park.  PERFECT!  We can take our work and our color with us with these binders.

All this blog activity, Facebooking, Tweeting, and work…right there is work to be done…is wearing out our mouse pad.  I’ll take the Bella Leather Mousepad in Pink, PRETTY PLEASE.

And since our office is now so pretty and organized we’ll need to tackle those unsightly cords.  No problem!

These retractable cord keepers I found at Style At Home keep us colorful and neat!

I’m almost done with my office…but there is something missing.  What was it??

Lighting – Right!  Kelley Moore envy means I need one of these!

As seen in House of Turquoise

The chandelier that is.  My new goal:  Office with a chandelier.

We’re done!  We decorated our office.  We’re surrounded by color and ready to create a magnificent day.  Let’s get to work!

Right after I’m done drawing with my Lilly Pulitzer highlighters and doodling with my Jonathan Adler pens…
