My Journey To melissaAnne COLORS Textile Products

My Journey To COLORS Textile Products

If you have followed along on my photography journey over the last 8+ years you know that I’ve had a long-time dream of putting my abstract style images on textiles for a branded line of melissaAnne COLORS textile products. The dream began many years ago with a single image, a desire to create my own handbag and evolved into research and design of pillows several years later.

I made a prototype collection of pillows from my Water Colors and Urban Colors images but never got as far as taking them to market.

Why? Well, a list of reasons, including the financial commitment required, “life” happening around me and my desire for fine fabrics and quality production. That last part has been the hardest to come by. When you are a small business, requiring customized small production runs your options are limited. I tried many companies and either the quality was not the right fit or the customer service was not what I expected and required.

When I was building my melissaAnne COLORS brand the personality was all about color, vibrancy, and uniqueness.

It was about getting up early and being in the right place at the right time for that special moment of color. Or staying up late to capture more moments. It was about taking adventures and not playing it safe in my own back yard. It was about seeing the world differently and sharing my passion for color!

When it came to textiles, there was a sensory expression that was of equal importance to me. I wanted the colors to FEEL as vibrant and special as they looked. I could only do that with the right products, textiles and vendors. Without it, it just wasn’t worth going to market.

Fast forward several years, lots of Google searching, trials and errors and some down right failures in working with vendors, persistence…and letting go of expectations…and here we are.

Persistence pays off…Letting go seals the deal.

Last year I found a new company that offered custom printing on textiles. Some of the requirements I’d set early in my search didn’t fit but I decided to let them go and take a chance. After all nothing had quite worked out so far. “Let’s just see…”

So I ordered fabric samples and they were fantastic! Rich, soft, luxurious…FEEL – check.

I ordered product samples with my designs and they were fantastic (like stopped on the street with comments from strangers fantastic…)! QUALITY…check.

I emailed with questions and support and the company was timely and supportive, even on weekends. Partnership-worthy CUSTOMER SERVICE…check!!

Getting Started With Scarves

It’s time. I’m going for it and I’m taking a slightly new direction with melissaAnne COLORS textile products and starting with fashion accessories instead of home accessories. The next step in my journey is a Spring Scarf launch with melissaAnne COLORS Impressionist Photography Designs. I selected two of my favorite and most popular images, one representing my current home in the Pacific Northwest and the other my soul home in Amsterdam. I can’t think of a better way to start.

Thanks for sticking with me. Thanks for listening to my textile dreams and not giving up on me…so I wouldn’t give up on them. And now, let’s do this! And, stay tuned…sample pillows are next on my list.

Dedication, Persistence, Letting Go…To Make It Go!

I’m placing my launch collection order on April 10 and as a supporter of melissaAnne COLORS I’m giving you an opportunity to purchase direct from me by April 9 at a special launch price. Scarves will be shipped in 4-6 weeks as each scarf is custom-made to order.

Wedding Bliss On Martha’s Vineyard

I was honored to be in attendance and to take some photos at my dear friend Kristy’s wedding on Martha’s Vineyard last month. I met Kristy over 10 years ago when I was working at a Crisis Management service provider and she was at an airline. As with many of my clients from those days, Kristy and I became friends and have continued our friendship through other jobs and life paths. Kristy and her now husband Noel’s story is one of true love, international long distance love at that, and perseverance. I’ve never been so happy or emotional at a wedding in my life. These two are the perfect couple and worked hard to get to their special day.

The last few weeks have been a bit challenging for many and with the media full of emotional stories, I wanted to send out a little love today, in my own style.

This photo was taken on South Beach on Martha’s Vineyard. Using sparklers, Kristy, Noel and the two boys Sam and Christopher spelled love for all the world to see.  Kristy requested I include this, as it was a major theme at the wedding. #LoveWins

Yes, Kristy, you helped prove that!

And just like my trip to Amsterdam last year and my #LoveLettersToAmsterdam theme, I have a lot of love for Martha’s Vineyard so here is my #LoveLetterToMarthasVineyard. An Impressionist photography image from Edgartown Harbor.

Thank you Martha’s Vineyard for the beauty and magic you always share.

You can see more wedding weekend fun, the magic of Debi Lilly’s wedding designs and Martha’s Vineyard scenery in a video I created for the happy couple. Visit my melissaAnne COLORS Facebook page to view.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Color on,

Melissa

Fan Favorites – Fall COLORS

Happy FRIDAY, let’s explore some Fall COLORS!!!

I was on a FANTASTIC trip to the East Coast last week and didn’t get my blog out. But, I’m back and it’s time for some Fall COLORS fun and fan favorites from my Instagram feed!

I love the colors, light, textures and layers that Fall brings. I caught this leaf glowing in the sun’s spotlight as it shined through a break in the trees above.

It reminds me of warm fires and cozy Fall days.

Fan Favorites – COLORS from Anacortes

Fan Favorites – COLORS from Anacortes

I’ve found inspiration in daily micro-blogging over on my Instagram account, but I know I’ve neglected my Blog and subscribers. I’m going to try out a new goal to do a weekly blog highlighting my most popular images on Instagram. Hopefully you will be inspired by these images too. I’ll also provide a coupon code and a one week only discount on select fan favorite images so you can get images off your screen and onto your walls.

Last week I featured images from a recent trip to Anacortes and one of my favorite area beaches, Rosario Beach. Here are the top 2 “fan favorites” for the week.

Coming in tops with 100 likes and several comments was this fun photo of the violent surf roaring onto the beach as the sun was setting. These were the biggest waves I’ve seen on this beach and was thankful that I was paying attention when a particularly BIG one crashed in and tried to take me and my tripod out! Still standing (and running quickly away from the looming waves) I was able to get some great shots of rolling waves highlighted by the sun’s glowing rays.

Coming in second, with 83 likes, is this Impressionist photography image of sunset color beginning to paint the sky.

Amsterdam Adventure Day Trip To Haarlem

It was a busy week closing up 2015 and ushering in new year Amsterdam style and it included an Amsterdam adventure day trip to Haarlem. For many of you it’s the first Monday of 2016 and you may be resuming a routine of school, office…post-holiday “normalcy”. Since returns to normalcy can sometimes be challenging, I hope this Haarlem virtual tour is a fun way to get your week started!

I’m choosing to start my first Monday the way I’d like to start many more: in a coffee shop in Amsterdam working on my travel blog. I know it seems like my days of full of play and frivolity as you read along with me on the blog, but it also takes a lot of work to get the photos ready and assemble in a post! It IS work, TRUST me on this!

Work I LOVE of course!

Last Monday morning (after staying up late working on my last full blog) I got up early and jumped the tram to Centraal Station and got a ticket on the Intercity train to a new destination. Haarlem, I was coming at you!

_MG_7169

A beautiful welcome to Haarlem in this lovely stained glass adorned train station as I disembarked and prepared for a walk around journey. I was starving by the time I got to Haarlem so on my walk to Grote Markt I stopped at Chocolate Company for a quick bite. You saw my 3 Steps To Win My Heart blog last week, this was actually from my morning hot cocoa and croissant breakfast in Haarlem.

_MG_7190

Starvation averted and chocolate happy buzz on high, I walked over to Grote Markt and the spectacular Cathedral of St Bavo and surrounding architectural jewels._MG_7209

A little annual Christmas ornament selfie tradition with the cathedral in the background…

St Bavo is amazing on the outside and I had no idea the magic it held inside, but I paid my €2.50 walked through the vault-like entrance and quickly discovered.

_MG_7256

Here are a few of my favorite cathedral treasures.

This is one of the newer windows at the cathedral and it is absolutely beautiful. The blues are rich and the red glows like fire when the sun comes through. I was fascinated by it and bought the book of how it was designed and created at the gift shop. I just couldn’t resist!

_MG_7273

Can we talk about THIS amazement.  WAY overhead this caught my eye. Beautiful, just beautiful!

_MG_7271

And this organ!

_MG_7287

I mean, it’s just an ordinary, ornate, spectacular organ right?

That MOZART played on.

_MG_7380

In the energetic presence of greatness I was! #sigh

On the other end of this massive cathedral was a serene and colorful little chapel alcove that was stunning and inviting.

_MG_7332

_MG_7359

I paid my €.50 and as I always do when in Europe I lit a candle. It’s something I do for someone who left my life much too soon.  He’s had candles burn for him across Europe. This year, unfortunately, I lit a candle for someone new who left my life recently. It seemed like a perfect spot to remember him.

_MG_7339

_MG_7357

As I sat on the chapel bench looking into this beautiful, colorful tapestry. I felt such immense gratitude for the opportunity to be where I am and the joy I get from sharing it with you all. Part of me wanted to sit there forever, so nothing would change. But, that’s not how life works and if I made the decision to stop and avoid change, well, ne’er another adventure I would see.  So up we go!

_MG_7383

_MG_7404

And, onward we go. Thank you St Bavo for a truly inspirational and beautiful morning in your architectural perfection and spiritual light. YOU are a treasure!!

Back out to the streets of Haarlem for a little touring around, I walk along…yep…more canals!

And, more COLOR! I love walking the streets and exploring. You find really interesting things and some great wisdom!

_MG_7523

I’ll get “lost” in the streets of Haarlem happy place and eat fries with curry sauce to that (sorry, no pie)!

_MG_7519

OK…can I just say that all fries and curry sauce are not created equal. I was STARVING after all this walking around and I was so excited to see a “walk up window” for fries. LET DOWN! I threw most of them away. SADNESS! #FryFail

Wandering a few streets in fry sadness and continued starvation, I happened upon the adorable cafe, By Lima, and away went my sadness! Magically replaced by more words of wisdom, a baked egg dish and winter thee.

Yeeeees! YEEEEEEES! Time machine! Y E S ! ! !

_MG_7540

_MG_7529

I REALLY want to stop back into this cafe before I head back to the States.  It was such a happy place!

I had somewhere to be that evening back in Amsterdam, so at dusk I headed back to the train station as my day trip to Haarlem came to an end. Along the way I was greeted by these lovelies again. WHAT ARE THEY?

_MG_7563

Less than 30 minutes later, I’m back at Amsterdam Centraal Station with a warm welcome.

Love Letter To Amsterdam

Haarlem! A wonderful day trip experience full of beautiful architecture, canals, reflections, and quaint restaurants and shops. I definitely recommend you jump a train for a day trip to Haarlem if you visit Amsterdam. It’s a quick and easy train ride!

Back later this week on the blog ushering in the New Year Amsterdam style. And, I hope to get back to #LoveLettersToAmsterdam this week!

Happy New Year!
