Mindfulness: Attained & Sustained

Mindfulness: Attained & Sustained

I hear this comment a lot, “You are so creative!”

I consider it a HUGE compliment because in part, it’s not completely a natural talent of mine. Yes, I have elements of my “creative identity” that come fairly natural. My creativity behind the camera lens is, in some ways, natural. But the reality is, even our natural talents have to be practiced in order to sustain them. AND, we also have to discover them. What if nobody had ever given me a camera. I would have no idea that a creative eye for photography lives inside.

The same is true for my mindfulness practice and the creative pages that fill my sketchbooks. This is definitely not a natural talent of mine by “traditional” means. I can’t draw. Really, I can’t. Sit me in front of a bowl of fruit and ask me to draw it and it won’t end well. On the page or in my body. I’ll be full of anxiety, doubt and judgement. Feelings I consistently work to remove from my life through mindfulness practices. After spending many years developing a mindful coloring practice, sit me in front of a sketchbook in a quiet, reflective environment and give me something to draw with and a whole different scenario plays out.

My body relaxes and feels soothed.

I effortlessly let color and expression flow onto the page in creative ways.

I end with a feeling of accomplishment, wonder and peace.

My Journey To melissaAnne COLORS Textile Products

My Journey To COLORS Textile Products

If you have followed along on my photography journey over the last 8+ years you know that I’ve had a long-time dream of putting my abstract style images on textiles for a branded line of melissaAnne COLORS textile products. The dream began many years ago with a single image, a desire to create my own handbag and evolved into research and design of pillows several years later.

I made a prototype collection of pillows from my Water Colors and Urban Colors images but never got as far as taking them to market.

Why? Well, a list of reasons, including the financial commitment required, “life” happening around me and my desire for fine fabrics and quality production. That last part has been the hardest to come by. When you are a small business, requiring customized small production runs your options are limited. I tried many companies and either the quality was not the right fit or the customer service was not what I expected and required.

When I was building my melissaAnne COLORS brand the personality was all about color, vibrancy, and uniqueness.

It was about getting up early and being in the right place at the right time for that special moment of color. Or staying up late to capture more moments. It was about taking adventures and not playing it safe in my own back yard. It was about seeing the world differently and sharing my passion for color!

When it came to textiles, there was a sensory expression that was of equal importance to me. I wanted the colors to FEEL as vibrant and special as they looked. I could only do that with the right products, textiles and vendors. Without it, it just wasn’t worth going to market.

Fast forward several years, lots of Google searching, trials and errors and some down right failures in working with vendors, persistence…and letting go of expectations…and here we are.

Persistence pays off…Letting go seals the deal.

Last year I found a new company that offered custom printing on textiles. Some of the requirements I’d set early in my search didn’t fit but I decided to let them go and take a chance. After all nothing had quite worked out so far. “Let’s just see…”

So I ordered fabric samples and they were fantastic! Rich, soft, luxurious…FEEL – check.

I ordered product samples with my designs and they were fantastic (like stopped on the street with comments from strangers fantastic…)! QUALITY…check.

I emailed with questions and support and the company was timely and supportive, even on weekends. Partnership-worthy CUSTOMER SERVICE…check!!

Getting Started With Scarves

It’s time. I’m going for it and I’m taking a slightly new direction with melissaAnne COLORS textile products and starting with fashion accessories instead of home accessories. The next step in my journey is a Spring Scarf launch with melissaAnne COLORS Impressionist Photography Designs. I selected two of my favorite and most popular images, one representing my current home in the Pacific Northwest and the other my soul home in Amsterdam. I can’t think of a better way to start.

Thanks for sticking with me. Thanks for listening to my textile dreams and not giving up on me…so I wouldn’t give up on them. And now, let’s do this! And, stay tuned…sample pillows are next on my list.

Dedication, Persistence, Letting Go…To Make It Go!

I’m placing my launch collection order on April 10 and as a supporter of melissaAnne COLORS I’m giving you an opportunity to purchase direct from me by April 9 at a special launch price. Scarves will be shipped in 4-6 weeks as each scarf is custom-made to order.

Amazon Biospheres “Snow Globe” Photo Go Viral To Close Out 2016

Amazon Biospheres Snow Globe Photo Go Viral To Close Out 2016…and open 2017!

Several weeks ago I told you about the awesome birthday surprise and the Jeff Bezos tweet of my “snow globe” photo of the Amazon Biospheres. It was fun and exciting and that tweet got a lot of attention!

1.1k likes as of last week!

A wow moment for me and I’m grateful to Jeff Bezos for sharing it and kicking off a bit of a domino effect as GeekWire picked up the photo tweet and featured it and my website. That was a surprise too!

Hey, December…I LIKE your surprises!

I reached out to the GeekWire reporter to send a thanks for featuring and the next thing I knew a follow-up interview was scheduled and there I was sitting down telling my story and talking about the Amazon Biospheres for a more detailed GeekWire feature.

A Year Older…Wiser…and My Moment With Jeff Bezos and the Amazon Biospheres

Last week was my birthday. I’m going to say that 46 feels GREAT! I have had an amazing, albeit a bit of a rollercoaster at times, year. It’s definitely been a year of growth, perspective and discovery and I learn more every day.  Here’s what I learned last week.

After the election I felt like I needed to do something to change the course of my social media feeds. It just wasn’t a fun place to hang out. So, I offered a free 30 Day Coloring Out Loud workshop to get people creating, connecting and sharing. If you follow me, you know that my workshops are full of color and creativity, but are more mindful self-discovery than art school. The workshop is going amazingly well and I’m spending a lot more time with my oil pastels and even some paints this month. This week, while coloring, I realized a pattern. I was “making something” with my art supplies and then when it felt done, I jumped in and changed it. I painted over it or I mixed the colors of my oil pastels to make something new. I was “letting go.”  When it happened unconsciously several times I was in tune enough to take note and think about it.

Let Go

That was the message that came to me and I connected deeply with. Nothing is “final.” You can add, change, and refocus to recreate something completely different out of what you originally started with. You can let go of an idea and let it become something else. Very powerful as we approach the end of the year and I begin to evaluate where I am and where I am going.

Then it snowed. On my birthday.

Yes, it snowed. An odd segue but stay with me.

Wedding Bliss On Martha’s Vineyard

I was honored to be in attendance and to take some photos at my dear friend Kristy’s wedding on Martha’s Vineyard last month. I met Kristy over 10 years ago when I was working at a Crisis Management service provider and she was at an airline. As with many of my clients from those days, Kristy and I became friends and have continued our friendship through other jobs and life paths. Kristy and her now husband Noel’s story is one of true love, international long distance love at that, and perseverance. I’ve never been so happy or emotional at a wedding in my life. These two are the perfect couple and worked hard to get to their special day.

The last few weeks have been a bit challenging for many and with the media full of emotional stories, I wanted to send out a little love today, in my own style.

This photo was taken on South Beach on Martha’s Vineyard. Using sparklers, Kristy, Noel and the two boys Sam and Christopher spelled love for all the world to see.  Kristy requested I include this, as it was a major theme at the wedding. #LoveWins

Yes, Kristy, you helped prove that!

And just like my trip to Amsterdam last year and my #LoveLettersToAmsterdam theme, I have a lot of love for Martha’s Vineyard so here is my #LoveLetterToMarthasVineyard. An Impressionist photography image from Edgartown Harbor.

Thank you Martha’s Vineyard for the beauty and magic you always share.
